Since this is a major mission, we needed a major partner. Our INBRAIN subsidiary INNERVIA has an ongoing 4 year collaboration with Merck KGaA to decode and modulate the Vagus nerve in high resolution and deliver therapies in areas of interest for Merck at the peripheral nervous system level.

As a Micro-Assembly & Integration Engineer, you will play a critical role in developing and optimizing and coordinating wafer testing as well as automated optical inspection (AOI) processes, and manufacturing data analysis for advanced medical devices. This role involves supporting clean room manufacturing operations, MES system integration, and managing large volumes of manufacturing data to ensure product quality and process stability.

This position will be office-based in Bellaterra/Barcelona.

Main responsibilities:

  • Development to Production Transfer: The principal responsibility of development team is to manage the development-to-production transfer process, ensuring that prototype designs are effectively scaled for manufacturing with a focus on yield improvement, design optimization, and manufacturing readiness. This includes creating and refining the Bill of Materials (BOM), Bill of Processes (BOP), manufacturing equipment specifications, testing protocols, and manufacturing recipes.
  • Develop and maintain testing recipes for electrical, optical, and functional testing and assembly of medical devices.  
  • Optimize and manage Optical Inspection processes to ensure defect detection, yield tracking, and device quality.
  • Upscale, when needed and according to quality standards and production volumes, the equipment and protocols used for testing.
  • Support clean room manufacturing operations by ensuring testing processes are integrated with MES systems for real-time data collection.
  • Analyze large volumes of manufacturing data to identify trends, process deviations, and areas for improvement in the production workflow.
  • Support coordination and manage external processes such as overmolding, final testing, and sterilization with third-party CMOs.
  • Collaborate with the clean room team, process engineers, and automation specialists to ensure seamless integration of testing processes with manufacturing workflows.
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 13485 standards by documenting testing protocols, results, and quality reports.
  • Manage risk assessments, verification protocols, and validation activities for testing processes.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance testing efficiency, accuracy, and reliability.
  • Provide technical support for MES system upgrades and data warehouse solutions to handle the growing volume of manufacturing data.

Mandatory Qualifications and Soft skills:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in testing and quality assurance for medical devices, semiconductor, or microfabrication industries.
  • Strong knowledge of data analysis tools and experience working with large manufacturing datasets.
  • Experience in managing external manufacturing partners such as CMOs for overmolding, testing, and sterilization processes.
  • Familiarity with ISO 13485 or other regulatory standards for medical device manufacturing.
  • Strong understanding of clean room protocols and manufacturing execution systems (MES).
  • Fluency in English required (English is company language).
  • Analytical Problem-Solver: Ability to troubleshoot complex testing issues and implement effective solutions.
  • Detail-Oriented: High precision in testing processes, data analysis, and documentation to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Collaborative: Strong communication skills to work effectively with internal teams and external manufacturing partners (CMOs).
  • Data-Driven: Comfortable managing and interpreting large datasets to drive decisions and improvements in testing processes.
  • Continuous Improvement Mindset: Proactively identifies areas for improvement in testing processes and implements solutions to enhance quality and efficiency.
  • Adaptable: Able to manage changing priorities and evolving testing requirements in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Project Management: Strong organizational skills to coordinate multiple projects and external partners simultaneously.

Nice to have:

  • Familiarity with manufacturing process V&V plans.
  • Hands-on experience with Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) tools and defect detection systems.
  • Experience with automated test equipment (ATE) and custom test recipe development.
  • Knowledge of advanced imaging techniques for defect detection and yield analysis.
  • Experience with robotics and motion control systems in testing environments.
  • Familiarity with AOI software and image processing algorithms for defect detection.
  • Experience with over molding processes and biocompatible encapsulation materials.
  • Previous experience in medical device sterilization protocols (e.g., ETO, gamma radiation, steam sterilization).
  • Knowledge of LEAN manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies (Six Sigma, Kaizen).
