Your mission

We are scientists, doctors, techies and humanity lovers, with the mission of pioneering real time precision neurology to cure brain-related disorders. INBRAIN harnesses the extraordinary material properties of Graphene, the world’s thinnest and nobel-prize winning material, to build high resolution neural systems. Our mission is to decode and modulate neural networks to restore people's lives.

As a Thin Films Materials Engineer, you will focus on optimizing thin film deposition techniques, material characterization, and process improvements for advanced semiconductor devices. You will be scaling thin film deposition processes for novel semiconductor materials and ensure their integration into microfabricated devices for high-precision medical and industrial applications.

You will be at the forefront of bringing advanced healthcare solutions to market, making a tangible difference in people´s lives worldwide.

This position will be office-based in Bellaterra.
Your profile

Main responsibilities:

  • Development to Production Transfer: manage the development-to-production transfer process, ensuring that prototype designs are effectively scaled for manufacturing with a focus on yield improvement, design optimization, and manufacturing readiness. This includes creating and refining the Bill of Materials (BOM), Bill of Processes (BOP), manufacturing equipment specifications, testing protocols, and manufacturing recipes.
  • Develop, optimize, and scale thin film deposition processes (e.g., PVD, CVD, sputtering, ALD) for microfabrication as well as other processes such as lift off, laser scribing, electrochemical testing and over-molding processes.
  • Collaborate with equipment vendors to manage equipment bring-up, qualification, and tool acceptance for thin film processes.
  • Coordinate or conduct materials characterization using tools such as SEM, AFM, XPS, FTIR, and profilometers etc to ensure film quality and performance.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve process issues related to thin film deposition, adhesion, and uniformity.
  • Implement process control methodologies, including SPC (Statistical Process Control), to monitor and improve process stability and yield.
  • Support the integration of new materials into device structures, ensuring compatibility with existing processes and substrates.
  • Assist with process documentation, including work instructions, process flows, and risk assessments.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives for thin film processes to improve yield, throughput, and material reliability.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams (clean room technicians, automation engineers, R&D) to support new product introductions (NPI) and scaling of production processes.

Mandatory Qualifications and Soft skills:

  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Experience in thin film deposition processes in a semiconductor, microfabrication, or materials development environment.
  • Fluency in English required (company main language)
  • Strong knowledge of PVD, CVD, ALD, and sputtering techniques.
  • Experience with materials characterization tools (e.g., SEM, AFM, XPS, profilometers).
  • Hands-on experience with process optimization and equipment qualification in clean room environments.
  • Strong understanding of substrate preparation, film adhesion, and material compatibility for multi-layer structures.
  • Analytical Problem-Solver: Strong troubleshooting skills to quickly identify root causes and implement solutions for process issues.
  • Detail-Oriented: High level of accuracy and attention to detail in process execution and documentation.
  • Collaborative: Ability to work effectively across cross-functional teams, including technicians, engineers, and external vendors.
  • Continuous Improvement Mindset: A drive to improve processes, enhance yields, and reduce variability in production.
  • Adaptable: Comfortable in a fast-paced, evolving environment with shifting priorities and new challenges.
  • Strong Communication Skills: Ability to clearly document processes, write reports, and present technical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences

Nice to have:

  • Experience working with novel semiconductor materials or biocompatible materials for medical or industrial applications.
  • Familiarity with process control systems (SPC, FMEA)
  • Knowledge of device integration and post-processing techniques (e.g., etching, bonding).
  • Experience with automated optical inspection (AOI) and yield management systems.
  • Familiarity with MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems) and data warehouse systems.
  • Previous experience in ISO 13485 or GMP-compliant environments.
  • Experience with vacuum systems, gas handling, and environmental controls for thin film processes.
